It began in the 1950s near Gütersloh: The family Flötotto produced the first school furniture. In the course of a few years Flötotto become the market leader in this field. Flötottos school chairs are fixed to a constant of everyday German culture and generations of students not only Germany but all over Europe dominate. Instrumental in the tremendous success of the chairs has a flexible, ergonomic seat shell deformed from Pag-wood, impregnated with a phenolic resin plywood book. This was patented in 1952 and is a "form Flötotto seat" in the design history - it sold over 21 million units.

The task of developing a school chair and as part of the move from a functional and ergonomic point of view rather narrowly defined job profile means for designing a great challenge. According to recent findings from neurobiology and behavioral psychology were incorporated into the design:
