The trade markof TMA – The Most Active (designer from Newcastle/UK) isthe absolute opposite of every carpet developed by Vartianuptillnow. The straight lines and urban look were an incentive to apply new techniques in colouring and work man ship, adding a new dimension to the hand-woven carpets from Nepal.
To be able tore produce the TMA pattern‘scolour character in the carpet, a new method was already adopted when dyeing theraw materials. Unlikethe solid-dyeing process, whichi stypical in the industryand in which entire ballsare coloured all at once overs everal hoursand then chemically „bleached“, with „Peek A Boo“ a new triple-dyeprocess was used.
With thetriple-dyeprocess the balls with theraw material are kept in permanent rotation on colours pindles in the dye bathfor a relatively short time, then rolled out and wound onto another colour spindle again. This process is carried out three times and produces an uneven colouring similar to the appearance of sun-bleached fibres – then atural multicolour effect. On the one hand, the triple-dyeprocess is much more time-consuming than conventional techniques and requires experienced dyers, but on the other hand, it gets by with out using any additional chemicals.
„Peek A Boo“ consists of 80% pure silk tolend a sheen to the rigourofthe design. The multi colour fibres – particularly in there dhues– are combinedwith solid-dyefibres using a variety of carpet-weaving techniques. To call attention to the abstract elements within the ellipse, design elements wereraised in the pile. The spatial effect of the design isemphasisedt hroughthe combination of the high/low weaving technique and loops. With the loops the wovenyarnis not cut, but remains a loop in the pile.
