Conceptual framework Sited on a small lot in Bardon, this was a challenging project. The existing two-bedroom worker’s cottage on a gulley block required extensive yet compact reworking to house a family with three young children.
Resolution A split level three story extension was conceived to attach to the rear of the existing house, comprising living spaces at the mid-level, family room at the lower, and parent’s retreat at the upper level.
The existing dwelling was reworked to accommodate the children.
An internal stair forms the link between old and new, providing site lines throughout the house, integrating both family and space.
Sustainability The well-shaded open plan extension to the western edge of the building together with the heat chimney effect of the internal stair has significantly improved the climatic performance of the existing house.
