This site deserved a special house, the owners had lived here for 7 years dreaming of the possibilities with what is arguably one of the best inner city seafront sites in New Zealand. Our idea was to build low and discreet so as to create privacy from the bordering coastal walkway. By lowering the house on site and stepping the pavilions with the site we achieved this. The Mid Century inspired home relates to its environment sympathetically and thoughtfully, every room spilling out onto lawns or terraces facing out to sea. The material palette was chosen with weathering the harsh salt air can bring in mind, and the materials all reflect in some way the natural materials on the beach next door.
