Origin

United Visual Artists as 2011

Origin is the latest development in UVA's exploration of large-scale responsive LED sculpture. As part of The Creator's Project events in New York and San Francisco, UVA created Origin, a responsive installation meant to explore our society's acceptance of a technocratic life form. The 10m x 10m cube of light both disrupts and reflects the city, eliciting an emotional reaction from those who enter its realm. Origin is the latest in a series of works derived from Orchestrion, the main stage design created by UVA for Coachella 2011. Origin is the product of a collaboration between United Visual Artists and Scanner, who composed the score. Origin was recently shown for the second time as part of The Creator’s Project inaugural 2012 event. The latest in a series of evolutions of Orchestrion (UVA’s cubic stage design for Coachella 2011), Origin formed the focal point of a festival of art and technology featuring live music, film screenings, and multimedia art installations at San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason. As part of their ongoing relationship with the Creators Project, UVA have redesigned the main stage for Coachella 2011. Creating both a platform for performance and a standalone light and sound sculpture, Orchestrion is a collaboration with composer Mira Calix. Featuring sliding doors, the 64m3 cubic structure opens for bands to perform in it, and closes as part of its own performance taking place at set times during the three day festival.
