This project studied the feasibility of a 30,000 sq. ft. vertical expansion to the University's Eye Research Institute (ERI). As the University's College of Medicine is in the heart of Chicago, the most cost effective solution was a vertical addition. The facility was originally designed to accommodate a total of four floors and the focus of the project was to accommodate the program in the limited space available. Facility requirements included vibration damping for laser instrumentation, segregation of air, independent zoning for temperature, cold room, and approximately 20,000 sq. ft. of wet lab space. The scope includes floor plans and assessment of their relationship with the clinical and research facilities occupying the original two floors. The final deliverable was 3 façade options with corresponding construction cost estimates.
