The Orangery

The Orangery

Hinton Cook Architects as Architects

The existing dwelling and a series of undulating glass structures on this site in Buckinghamshire have been demolished and the site remodelled to accommodate two contemporary, luxury houses.

The plan is designed with the occupant in mind. 21st century living has greatly influenced the ‘open plan’ design principles, with the fluidity of spaces ensuring a well thought out and functional plan.

Kitchen, breakfast and dining spaces are interlinked with the ability to unite them into a singular space, via sliding doors and partitions. Linked to the dining space, the living room projects outwards and through a subtle level change eventually opens out onto a south-facing patio. Bedrooms are located both on and below ground level with apertures facing south, whilst the main bedrooms will contain walk-out spaces and balconies; integrating the internal plan with the outdoor spaces.

The proposed landscaping scheme will maximise light and allow access to the basement via a series of stepped terraces, whilst flagstone patios and footpaths are proposed to compliment the choice of external materials. The gardens to the north and south of the site are to be retained along with any trees within the immediate context of the buildings’ footprint. An innovative approach to construction has been taken which includes using polystyrene insulation filled with concrete. These houses will also incorporate heat pumps, P.V solar and rainwater harvesting systems.
