character cafe - santorini island

minimal chic cafe in Santorini island, Greece

dimitris economou interiors as Designers

Placed among many cafes and restaurants on the most famous volcanic cliffs of Santorini called "caldera", CHARACTER cafe is a fresh, cozy and romantic place as it should be for the particular location. The project that was designed by Dimitris Economou from scratch, was inspired by grape leaves and pergolas that are scattered all over the island and also Greece. Therefore, instead of using the classic wooden blinds, the designer preferred to create corners with grapevine pergolas all over the cafe. The discreet simplicity of the project is what makes it elegant. Caldera is the protagonist in the scenery and the project is just the right frame to the masterpiece. Lime was chosen to be the colour that would make the difference in caldera without destroying the traditional Aegean scenery, always combined to the total white. Some art pieces of a well-known local artist decorate the cafe-restaurant's walls. The grey cement floor creates a homey atmosphere and prevents sun light from reflecting to the customer's eyes, creating a pleasant stay. The cafe lays on three levels starting from the street level and goes down the caldera, where dinner tables are placed among basils, grapevine pergolas and dry decorative grapevines. Lime umbrellas catch the eye from far while creating a sense of freshness when one enjoys coffee, drink or food when visiting the cafe.
