Nil Atalay and Tobias Juretzek, Studio Nito Nil Atalay and Tobias Juretzek only launched Studio Nito in 2015, and yet managed to walk away with third prize in Salone Satellite–a platform for emerging designers at Milan’s Salone del Mobile–for their Bobina Chair. Inspired by the bobbins used in sewing machines, and drenched in innovation, the designers combined cotton yarn with bioresin in a manufacturing technique that turned the textile into the solid material of which the chair is composed. “It was quite a long process to make the development. We had several stages and prototypes until the final design,” the designers said in an email from their studio in Germany. “At the end it took us almost a year to create the Bobina series.” Even through their studio is new, the duo’s work in design is not. They both studied product design at the Academy of Arts and Design in Germany—Nil’s focus on textile design, and Tobias’s on furniture. After which, Tobias launched his own studio and worked on projects with the likes of Casamania and Sahco, while Nil took to university lecturing. After collaborating on several projects together over the years, they decided they should going into business, and Studio Nito was born. “We really love to work with fabrics and textiles. It is intriguing how they convey familiarity and evoke emotions,” the duo says, “and yarn in combination with technology yield interesting results, and our idea is to translate these results into solid three-dimensional forms and structures.”
