Since the establishing of the practice in 2008, Serge Schoemaker Architects has been working on projects that require a sensitivity to context. During this work the practice has created a fascination for architectural solutions that are modest in their approach and powerful in their experience.
Serge Schoemaker Architects has a special interest in the experiential potential and physical qualities of material and construction. This interest, originating from a fascination for craftsmanship, is supported by Serge Schoemaker's academic work and an office based research, predominantly defined by extensive model studies.
With its research-based approach the practice searches for tailor-made architectural solutions that combine the everyday with the artistic within the boundaries of the assignment. The practice aims to create architecture that is contemporary and rooted in its context, at all scales.
Serge Schoemaker Architects is currently involved in a wide range of projects at different scales in the public and private realms. Recent projects in the Netherlands include a conversion of the UNESCO Fort near Hoofddorp and an expansion of the Museum of Moluccan Culture; a conference and exhibition center in the Southeast of the USA and a villa in Central Turkey.
The practice is international in its outlook and has numerous collaborative projects with national and international project partners. The work of the practice has been published and exhibited frequently. In 2010 Serge Schoemaker was rewarded with a grant from the Netherlands Foundation of Visual Arts, Graphic Design and Architecture.
Serge Schoemaker (1975) studied architecture at the TU Delft in the Netherlands and the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His graduation project was awarded the Archiprix International 2001.
