Kanner Architects is an award-winning studio of 20 architects in Santa Monica, California. Design is directed by Stephen H. Kanner, FAIA. The firm celebrated 60 years of continuous design excellence in 2006.
Our goal is to explore, develop and produce designs of warm and timeless Modernist architecture. This bright vision fulfills clients’ needs by creating environments that are uniquely planned: sensitive to site and budget, mindful of conservation, and inventive in use of materials.
Kanner Architects is internationally recognized and the firm has garnered more than three-dozen design awards in recent years, many of which were from local and national chapters of the American Institute of Architects. The firm won the 2006 AIA National Housing Committee Award and has brought home the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design award, the Next LA award, the IDEA award as well as a dozen local LA Business Council Awards.
We have considerable experience designing open, light and uplifting facilities for communities. Our work includes several multi-family projects both in the City of Santa Monica and City of Los Angeles. Residential projects we completed or are currently under construction include 26th/Santa Monica Affordable Housing (a 44-unit development for the Community Corporation of Santa Monica), Metro Hollywood Transit Village (a 60-unit, low-income mixed use development for CRA/LA), Venice at Superior Apartments, The Hollywood Condominiums, Urban Exposition Condominiums, Sunset/Vine Adaptive Reuse (Apartments/Retail Mixed-Use project) and Bentley-Massachusetts Apartments in Westwood. Multi-residential projects currently in design include High Place (affordable rental units and condominiums in Santa Monica), Cherokee Avenue Condominiums, Havenhurst Condominiums, Amazing Grace Condominiums, and the Hollywood Evolution Condominiums.
Meanwhile, we have several single-family projects as well as commercial and institutional buildings in the design stages and under construction. In addition, our well-rounded experience also include other project types, such as hospitality design (Sunset Time Hotel and Condominiums, Manhattan Country Club and Hotel), interior and exterior office remodels (Disney IM Digital, Grand Hope and Luckman Plaza), retail (stores for PUMA, Taschen Bookstore, Anne Geddes, and Quiksilver), IN-N-OUT Burger in Westwood Village and San Francisco and an expressive, futuristic gas station in Ladera Heights. Last but not least, KA has successfully completed several institutional commissions, namely the Bright Child/Child Care Center, the Eagle Rock Child Care Center, the Ross Snyder Recreation Center and Carson High School (LAUSD).
