Our aim is to create low energy environments.
We have developed an integrated approach to architectural design, incorporating structure, technology, environmental controls, ecology, landscape and infrastructure into the design process in order to create low energy, high quality environments.
This approach is applied to all areas of Design, procurement, construction, research, from full architectural services and masterplanning to urban design, interior design and product design. We work in an intensely collaborative environment, encouraging projects to grow naturally out of the discussion between client, architects, engineers, consultants and contractors and maximise the value that each member of the team can bring to the success of the project.
ABOUT
Bucholz McEvoy Architects was founded by Merritt Bucholz and Karen McEvoy in 1996 following their successful entry into the international competition to design the new civic headquarters for Fingal County Council. Since then the company has grown, with 20 architects with offices in Dublin and Berlin, and enjoys a reputation as the leading exponents of both high quality/ low energy design across Europe in both the public and private sectors. The practice provides full RIAI architectural services together with interior design, urban design, masterplanning, conservation architecture, landscape design and infrastructure/ ecological design. We also have our own in-house modelshop, a primary tool in our laboratory of research and design development.
HOW WE WORK
Our approach to work is embodied in the ethos of our office; integrated, collaborative striving to reduce energy demand and maximise quality and value - in all of our projects we take an integrated approach to architectural design incorporating structure, technology, environmental controls, ecology, landscape and infrastructure. We work in an intensely collaborative environment, encouraging projects to grow naturally out of the discussion between client, architects, engineers, consultants and contractors. Our best work, and our happiest clients, have always come from projects where there has been constant communication between all of the people involved. We embrace the fact that this is a team effort with a important role for every member to play.
This process depends upon meticulous research and analysis together with our combined experience, to create for our client’s responsive designs of the very highest quality regardless of the constraints of programme, economy, technology or culture.
Each building is carefully designed in terms of low energy|sustainability. We consider every detail in terms of energy consumption, maintenance and lifespan. This is not confined to major processes such as building climate control but even down to the light fittings, for example, which are specified with care and thought as to how they will perform and as to how they will be maintained.
Our work has been featured in publications around the world including Detail in Germany, Architectural Record in New York, L’Arca in Italy and A+U in Tokyo.
We have also been recognised with many international awards.
DESIGN AND RESEARCH
The Bucholz McEvoy design process was developed using meticulous research and analysis together with our combined experience. Critical to all projects is the briefing process, during which we work hard to understand what is there, what was there and what could be there. We look at the project and get a sense of it as a totality, not a set of disparate elements, but a complete entity that has come to exist at this precise moment in time.
We work closely with the appropriate engineers and consultants so that we can gain a complete understanding of each piece of fabric, system or material. We then develop and evaluate designs using models that we build in-house, simulations, drawings and calculations. Our work is about creating forms that contain engineering achievement
