Atelier BNK co.,ltd.

Atelier BNK has been active in architectural design in Hokkaido since Takashi Akiyama, Tatsuya Goto, and Akio Hamada founded it in 1970 in Sapporo. When the studio first opened, it concentrated on houses and interiors, but after the 1980s it gradually increased its opportunities to get involved in public architecture. It is now centered in Sapporo, with offices in the Tohoku region. The works of BNK has been praised from various quarters. Three of its works have received the AIJ Annual Architectural Design Commendation, which is one of Japan’s most important architectural prizes, 17 of its works have appeared in the Selected Architectural Designs of AIJ, and seven of its works have won the Public Building Award Excellence Prize, as well as others. Among regional prizes, it has won the Hokkaido Architecture Award and the Architectural Institute of Japan Hokkaido Architectural Encouragement Prize, each with five works. In the summer of 2013, BNK staged an exhibition entitled “Shelters in the Subarctic”, showing a collection of its recent work, which was an opportunity to share its ideas on architecture more widely. This Collection of Works is an anthology of major works since 2000 that are based on the concepts illustrated by the exhibition. (June 2015)
