The numerous versions and versatility of the Plastic Chair coupled with its comparatively reasonable price, have made it one of the most popular designs by Charles and Ray Eames. In 1993, Vitra stopped producing the shell chairs - which were originally made from fibreglass-reinforced polyester resin - due to ecological reasons. However since 1999 and 2004, the Eames' plastic shells (the S-shell and the Eames Plastic Armchair shell respectively) have been available once again this time manufactured using recyclable polypropylene. Due to practical material requirements, the upholstered versions could not be offered for a long time. Now, the "historical" production process has been successfully updated, and the upholstered shells can once again be mass-produced. Polyurethane foam is sprayed onto the plastic shell and then joined to the textile covering in such a way that the foam material cannot shift. The soft, modelled upholstery emphasises the organic look of the formfitting shells and ensure extremely comfort. The chair’s characteristic vinyl edge not only serves to reinforce the connection between the durable Hopsak cover and the plastic shell, but also traces the contours of the chair. The vinyl edge comes in either white or black. The textile covers are available in 13 different colours and can be combined with a choice of 8 differently coloured polypropylene shells, giving the upholstered Plastic Chairs an incredibly fresh look.
